As the night progresses, we transition into REM sleep, the realm of dreams. "Think of REM sleep as the ultimate virtual reality experience," suggests Dr. Dimitriu. While our bodies remain still, our brains are abuzz, processing emotions, consolidating memories, and even fostering creativity.

REM sleep is like a therapist, helping us make sense of our emotional experiences and simulate future scenarios. It's also a playground for creativity, where the brain tests out new connections, leading to those sometimes bizarre but often insightful dreams.

Lack of sleep can wreak havoc on our mental state. It impairs impulse control, making us more prone to unhealthy choices and emotional outbursts. "Moods are more intense and tempers shorter after a night of poor sleep," warns Dr. Dimitriu. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for impulse control, is the first to suffer when we're sleep-deprived.

Over time, the consequences of sleep deprivation extend beyond mood swings. It increases the risk of various health problems, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and even heart attacks.

Modern life, with its artificial lights and electronic devices, has made sleep an afterthought.
